Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, everyone. I hope you enjoyed your well-deserved break, and I am excited to be back making music with your students.

I am hopeful that our Band will be able to continue providing a wonderful musical experience for your children during the Spring semester. If changes are needed regarding any of our activities, I will communicate them via this newsletter.

I strongly encourage your child to take their instrument home as often as is feasible in the event we pivot to remote learning. If needed, we will continue to work on our LGPE music virtually.

(PS: Go Dawgs! Sorry, Nate.)

Curricular Classes (Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and Percussion Class)

Summative #2 Grades and Comments are on ManageBac

  • Grades and feedback are posted to ManageBac. Students can resubmit videos or play for me in person before Friday, January 14 to raise their grades, if desired.

Summative #3-5

  • As we prepare our LGPE music, students will record and submit videos of their parts for feedback and a score. This Google Doc contains all of the information students need to submit their three videos. The first video for all classes will be due on Friday, January 21.

Calendar Updates, and Pre-LGPE Rehearsal and Concert

  • I have updated the Spring calendar for the semester. Please see the document linked here. Mrs. Tamu Taylor will update the website calendar when possible reflecting these minor scheduling changes. (A huge thanks to her for all of her website work!)
  • Concert Band and Percussion Class will have four after-school rehearsals as we prepare for LGPE. These will be held on Feb 8, Feb 22, March 1, and March 8, from 3:45 to 4:30 PM. These are required and graded.
  • All classes should plan on attending a brief dress rehearsal on Thursday, February 24 between 3:45 and 5:00 as we prepare for our concert. A schedule will be released as the concert nears. This is a required and graded rehearsal.

Parent Volunteers Needed – Spring Coffeehouse

I am excited to have our first Spring DHS Band Coffeehouse on Wednesday, May 11, 2022.

What is this event? The coffeehouse will be a place for students to perform solos, duets, trios, chamber music, etc. in a less formal space than in our theater. The event will also have a fundraiser component with ticket sales, a silent auction, and a dessert bar. It will take place in our cafeteria and courtyard. Big thanks to Cathy Marella-Luce to help organize this event.

Parent Needed: Silent Auction Manager (administer the silent auction.)

Parent Needed: Dessert Master (find donations/purchase desserts to have for sale at the coffeehouse.)

Parent Needed: Decorator (transform our cafeteria/courtyard into a posh space for parents and students!)

If you're available, you can write to Cathy Marella-Luce at
